Creating intelligent and manageable access security for your MDU or home

Grandstream’s GSC3560 & GSC3565 Smart Outdoor Intercoms and GDS3720 Series Door Stations can be fully integrated with Home Assistant for smart MDU and home deployments. Home Assistant is an open-source home automation platform that allows users to manage smart home devices from a centralized area. Some of the core capabilities of Home Assistant include centralized device management, an automation engine, and flexible configuration settings. The integration with Home Assistant allows users to create their own interconnected, private, smart living space. GSC3560/5 and GDS3720 Series become part of a smart ecosystem with the Home Assistant integration, which enhances operational efficiency and system security.

Adding GSC3560 and/or GDS3720 Series to Home Assistant

Home Assistant can be integrated with the GSC3560 Series of Smart Outdoor Intercoms and GDS3720 Series Door Stations by installing HACS (Home Assistant Community Store) and Home Assistant. After the apps have been installed, users need to download and install Grandstream Home Integration, then restart Home Assistant via the HACS dashboard.

Once the installation is completed, users must configure the GSC356x and/or GDS372x device using the following steps:

  1. Access the GSC3560/65 and/or GDS3720 series Web UI settings and make sure Home Assistant is enabled
  2. Set the username and password in the RTSP server
  3. Go into Home Assistant Device & Services settings and add Grandstream Home Integration
  4. Select or add the GSC/GDS device to Home Assistant

Devices that are in-network with Home Assistant are automatically discovered. However, if the device does not show up, users can manually add it to Home Assistant.

Please refer to our GSC356x technical guide here and our GDS372x technical guide here for more detailed information on the installation process.

Capabilities of the Home Assistant Integration

Home Assistant Integration enhances GSC3560/65 and GDS3720 series deployments in several ways. Primarily, the integration has device management from a central location, notification and alert setup, and robust automation configuration options.

Central Management and Local Control

The GSC3560/65 and GDS3720 devices can be managed from the Home Assistant dashboard. This means that each device can be incorporated into a complete smart home solution. Furthermore, the devices have access to Home Assistant’s local control and privacy protections once they are added to Home Assistant. This ensures the device’s management and privacy are protected, making the deployment even more secure.

Automation & Alerts Configuration

Time-conditional Alerts

With the Home Assistant integration, automations and alerts can be configured that automatically trigger a response when access is detected. For example, users can set up standard working hours in a specific time frame for their supported GSC or GDS device. If access is detected during off-hours or outside of the allocated time frame, users can trigger an alert on the Home Assistant dashboard. In an MDU environment, alerts could be set up during late hours of the night to prevent break-ins or serious incidents. Users can specify which device the alert happens on and under which time conditions it would fall under. This integration adds an extra level of safety and security at all hours.

Event-based Automation

Users can take advantage of preset automations on Home Assistant or create their own by setting triggers for specific events or conditions and actions that follow those triggers. Examples of triggers can be loitering/intrusion, high temperature, or keypad input error alarms. The conditions would either fall before or after a fixed time or at a specific timestamp. Users can then select the action, which could be notifications to the device, user, or dashboard, or for the device to start video recording with Home Assistant. Users can set the duration of the recording, which is automatically saved in the system. These automation scenarios notify users at all times of any events that happen around their devices and ensure they and their communities are protected from any event.

Home Assistant Integration with GSC3560/65 Smart Outdoor Intercoms and GDS3720 Series Door Stations elevates their deployment flexibility by having a centralized management platform and automation configurations that add another layer of security for users. Users can have access to Home Assistant’s privacy protections and local control for their own devices. Time-conditional alerts and event-based automations allow users to be aware of any events, even if they are not in proximity to their devices. The Home Assistant Integration ensures users feel safe and protected in their living spaces and allows installers to integrate support for GSC and GDS devices with a home automation platform.
