10 Minute Read or Listen

The GWN7062E and GWN7062ET are Grandstream's latest router models. Designed for small offices and home networks, these routers offer a wide range of capabilities. Up to 3Gbps wireless throughput on a Wi-Fi 6 network, rich firewall features, support for mesh networking, built-in VPN support, and many other features combine to create a stable foundation for any small IT infrastructure deployment. In this blog post, we cover the major features supported by the GWN7062E and GWN7062ET, and how you can use them in your clients' networks.

For a more technical-focused resource, you can find the user manual for the GWN7062E and GWN7062ET here.

SOHO Performance Focused

When designing the GWN7062E and GWN7062ET, we aimed to create a Wi-Fi router that offers both high performance and a diverse set of features that come together to establish a stable network backbone for small offices and home offices. The series offers 2.4G 2×2:2 and 5G 3×3:2 MU-MIMO with XTRA Range technology, featuring beamforming for maximum network throughput and expanded Wi-Fi coverage range, as well as support for wireless Mesh networks. Additionally, built-in VPN support enables secure in-office and inter-office connectivity. With powerful Wi-Fi capabilities, in-depth network Qos/firewall settings, convenient traffic monitoring, and advanced network customization such as MESH and VPN features, the GWN7062E/ET is an ideal router for smart homes, small offices, and growing business networks.

Other key features of the series include:

  • UL/DL OFDMA: Included with the Wi-Fi 6 standard, this technology delivers greater performance in dense client environments with a multitude of bandwidth demands.
  • Up to 128 Concurrent Devices: Perfect for smart homes and offices, the GWN7062E and GWN7062ET can support a multitude of IoT, smart, and endpoint devices without compromising performance.
  • Rich Firewall Features and Security Features: DoS protection, URL content filtering, guest networks, data control, and other settings can be deeply customized to keep a SOHO environment protected.
  • 2 FXS Ports: For traditional telephony environments, the GWN7062ET is equipped with FXS ports, which also function as analog telephone adapters.

Traffic Management and QoS Settings

The GWN7062E and GWN7062ET feature a suite of traffic management, firewall, and security settings to provide users with greater control over how their network is utilized and secured. This customization helps the routers meet the needs of diverse networks within the SOHO sector.

Traffic Statistics

Users can view real-time traffic statistics based on both the clients and applications operating through a GWN7062E/ET. While viewing client statistics, data can be sorted by the current day, the current week, and the current month. A statistical history graph will show a breakdown of overall client upload and download usage over the selected time period. The data on this graph can be further drilled down to display only wired clients, wireless clients, specific Wi-Fi SSIDs, or specific clients. A separate Application Statistics section allows you to evaluate network usage by both specific applications/software and application groups, including social media, work tools, entertainment websites, and more. This data can be further broken down to show the percentage of network usage based on either application or the group.

Quality of Service (QoS) and Priority Groups

With a firm understanding of the GWN7062E/ET's traffic statistics tools, a thorough analysis of the network's usage can provide helpful insights for customizing the Quality of Service (QoS) features. QoS is a network feature that prioritizes specific types of internet traffic to ensure optimal performance for critical applications. Users can allocate bandwidth more efficiently, reducing latency for gaming, streaming, video calls, specified applications, application groups, and other high-priority tasks. This significantly increases the GWN7062E/ET's deployment adaptability.

QoS configurations can be set broadly across an entire network, customized by WAN, application groups, specific applications/software, and even defined for individual clients. When configuring QoS settings for a group or individual applications, the user determines which priority group the application falls into. Once this is done, the applications on the network will follow the bandwidth rules of their priority group as defined in the feature's basic settings. When network traffic is heavily congested, these priority rules limit the minimum and maximum bandwidth that the applications can utilize within the network based on their priority rules. The GWN7062E/ET will ensure that all applications in priority group 0 meet their minimum bandwidth requirements before moving to all applications in priority group 1, then 2, and so on. Individual clients, groups of clients, and specified IP addresses can also be sorted into respective priority groups.

Firewall, Security Settings, VPN

The GWN7062E and GWN7062ET routers can have their firewall settings deeply customized to fit both home environments and small office/business environments. Firewall and security settings are located under the HomeCare category in the Basic menu and the Security category in the Advanced menu.

Parental Control, Security Firewall, and SafeSearch

Advanced firewall configurations are found under the HomeCare category when configuring a GWN7062E or GWN7062ET. Parental Control settings allow network administrators to manage and control internet access for specific devices that are connected to the network. Key settings include:

  • Time-Based Restrictions: Set internet access schedules to restrict online usage during specific hours, such as school nights or weekends.
  • App and URL Filtering: Block or allow certain applications or websites to ensure safe browsing.
  • Device-Specific Rules: Apply different rules for different devices, either by selecting from connected clients or adding devices manually.
  • General Settings: Option to block internet access for unmanaged devices that are not subject to parental control rules.

Additionally, when enabled, a SafeSearch feature forces search engines to automatically filter sensitive content and restricted items. This feature is designed to help protect users, especially children, by blocking explicit or sensitive search results across the supported search engines.

The security firewall of the GWN7062E/ET has several layers of defense. The Security Firewall feature under HomeCare provides basic network security by detecting and preventing potential threats, helping to protect connected devices from malicious attacks. Content-specific firewall features can be enabled and defined under the Advanced menu within the Security section. Administrators can manage and restrict network access to specific websites, URL categories, applications, and application groups. By leveraging and customizing the GWN's content control, both businesses and homes can create secure environments, preventing the usage of restricted sites and internet applications. This keeps both the network and the users operating within it safe.

Virtual Private Network

Two of the key use cases for a VPN are to connect multiple sites, such as an enterprise's satellite offices to its central headquarters, and to provide remote workers with access to a central network so they may access an organization's network resources. A GWN7062E/ET router supports multiple VPN protocols, providing flexibility and security tailored to network requirements.

  • WireGuard®
  • IPSec
  • OpenVPN
  • PPTP
  • L2TP

A setup wizard is available for each VPN type, designed to help the user intuitively set up their VPN on a GWN7062E/ET router. By following this wizard, users can rapidly configure the required VPN connections without needing to navigate complex settings manually, making it an ideal solution for businesses looking to enhance security without complexity.
